FAQ
1. Do I need to be in shape before starting? And what if I’m smaller, older, or less athletic?
Nope. BJJ will help you get in shape. Classes scale to your fitness and ability level. BJJ is about leverage and technique, not brute force. People of all ages, shapes, and sizes succeed here.
2. Do I need prior martial arts or wrestling experience?
Not at all. This class is designed for total beginners. Step by step, no pressure.
3. What should I wear and bring to my first class?
Comfy athletic clothes (t-shirt and shorts/leggings) work just fine. A gi and rash guard are best, we can lend you a clean uniform for your first class. Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated — but please, only water on the mats (no food or sports drinks). And be ready to train barefoot once you step onto the mats.
4. What’s the belt system in BJJ?
Adults progress: white → blue → purple → brown → black. Stripes mark progress within each belt. Belts aren’t about time served — they’re about skill and consistency.
5. What if I feel nervous or claustrophobic?
Totally normal at first. You can “tap out” anytime, and training is always controlled. We’ll help you build comfort step by step.
6. Will I have to spar on my first day?
No. You’ll start with drills and basics. Live sparring comes later — after you’ve got the tools and confidence.
7. Is BJJ good for Self-Defence?
Absolutely. You’ll learn control, escapes, and submissions without striking — perfect for real-world defense. (And if you want striking later, we also offer Muay Thai.)
8. Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe?
Yes. Safety is built into training. You’ll learn how to protect yourself and your training partner.
9. Can children, teens, and adults all train?
Yes. This specific class is for ages 14+, but we also have programs for kids and younger teens.
10. What should I expect in my first class?
Light warm-ups, simple drills, partner techniques, and lots of coaching support. Zero pressure — just learning.
11. How long does it take to get a black belt?
On average, 10–15 years of consistent training. But don’t focus on the finish line — just enjoy the journey.
12. How much does it cost?
Training is $100/month, but enjoy your first month for only $50 — plus you’ll get 40% off your first uniform when you join!
13. Do I need to roll with members of the opposite sex?
No. You are in control of your personal boundaries and who you work with in any class here. If you feel uncomfortable working with someone, just politely say no, or speak to your instructor. This is a Co-Ed class, so males and females will be in the class.
14. What are the hygiene expectations?
Clean clothes, trimmed and clean nails, shower before class. Nobody likes “stinky partner.” Keep it fresh = keep it safe.
15. How long has Heiho Dojo been in business?
We have been serving the peace area for over 15 years under locally born and raised Head Coach Laine Ingalls. Our team has enjoyed working with all age groups and some amazing people over the years.
16. What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or B.J.J. is a Japanese originating style of Martial Arts that was shared with the Gracie family in Brazil by Mitsuyo Maeda in 1914, and the rest is history. It’s a style that focuses on taking an opponent to the ground and controlling them with position to allow for a submission to win the fight.
17. How long can I stay in the Newbie BJJ classes?
As long as you want! But at some point you will earn your first stripe on your white belt and will have successfully taken the biggest, and most important, step in your BJJ journey. The main idea of this class is to get people their 1st and 2nd stripe as fast as possible with focused attention, and get them into the more advanced classes when you are ready. Let’s get started!
18. Do I need to buy a gi (uniform) right away?
We’ll lend you one for your first class. If you stick with it (and we hope you do!) you’ll eventually need your own gi.
19. How often should I train as a beginner?
Any training is better than no training. 2 or 3 times per week is ideal when learning anything new, but if you can only make it once per week, that’s ok by us, it just might take you a little longer to see the skill build. Repetition builds real skill — consistency beats intensity every time.
20. When are the classes?
Every Tuesday & Thursday at Heiho Dojo from 6:00pm to 6:45pm leaving some time at the end of class for any extra questions or review.
21. Why should I take the Newbie BJJ class?
Starting something new can feel intimidating — and we get it. This class is designed for people with zero
experience, so you’ll fit right in from day one.
• Learn real self-defence in a safe, controlled setting.
• Build confidence and discipline (without the drill-sergeant vibe).
• Get moving, get stronger, and discover a fun new way to exercise.
• Meet a welcoming community of people who remember exactly what it felt like to be brand new.
Think of it as a crash-course in grappling, fitness, and laughing at yourself (because we all do at first). No
pressure, no ego — just a supportive place to start your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey.
